چکیده

Glutamine, the most abundant free amino acid in human plasma, has outstanding nutritional and non-nutritional properties. Glutamine regulates immune function and modulates cell metabolism. In particular, its administration showed a positive effect on glucose oxidation and on insulin resistance in different experimental and clinical studies. In humans, glutamine acts as both a substrate and modulator of its metabolism to glucose. In trauma patients and in critical illness, parenteral glutamine supplementation improved insulin sensitivity and enhanced the release of insulin by pancreatic β-cells. In a recent clinical study, also, oral L-glutamine supplementation ameliorated the glucose profile in obese patients and those with type 2 diabetes. The mechanisms underlying these specific effects are still unknown. Further clinical trials investigating the role of glutamine on glucose/insulin metabolism are needed. Several diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, may receive important benefits from glutamine supplementation, possibly in association with conventional therapy. The Effects of Simvastatin on Free Fatty Acids Profile in Fructose-fed Insulin Resistant Rats

Backgrounds: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disease and free fatty acids, as signaling molecules, can play a crucial role in the development of it. Different free fatty acids, through various cell membrane receptors, induce different effects on metabolic pathways and thereby affect insulin sensitivity. Simvastatin is a cholesterol decreasing drug prescrib...

Metabolic effects of milk protein intake strongly depend on pre-existing metabolic and exercise status

Milk protein intake has recently been suggested to improve metabolic health. This Perspective provides evidence that metabolic effects of milk protein intake have to be regarded in the context of the individual's pre-existing metabolic and exercise status. Milk proteins provide abundant branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and glutamine. Plasma BCAAs and glutamine are increased in obesity and ins...

Magnesium supplementation enhances insulin sensitivity and decreases insulin resistance in diabetic rats

Objective(s): Diabetes mellitus has been suggested to be the most common metabolic disorder associated with magnesium deficiency. This study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of magnesium supplementation on insulin receptor activity in elderly type 2 diabetes using a rat model and to provide experimental evidence for insulin resistance improvement by magn...
